Amazon’s coverage of the Premier League is a win for consumers. But what does the US giant get out of the deal?

Premier League football has launched on Amazon (US: AMZN) Prime. For the first time, Brits can bypass traditional TV to watch top flight football via the internet. At £8 a month, Prime Video membership offers the cheapest access to football since Sky bought the rights to Premier League broadcasting in 1992. Coverage wasn’t flawless. Wheeling out the BBC’s ever-present pundits Gaby Logan and Alan Shearer seemed a safe, but boring choice for the pre and post match analysis. The quality of the picture was at times questionable, while the weakness of the UK’s broadband network meant some fans were getting goal…
