Daily Mail vs New York Times: which newspaper makes a better investment?

British investors are rightly wary of London’s media market – the shifting nature of journalism has made it very difficult for several companies in the sector. Could there be an alternative across the pond? Rising profits and more than 4.5m digital subscribers suggest that the New York Times' remains a valuable business. In this article, we assess which of the two newspaper giants is the better investment option.

In May 2019, the New York Times (US: NYT) carried an interesting piece looking at the financial performance of Donald Trump's businesses in 2018. It found that many of Trump's hotels and golf courses had suffered falling revenues during the year. That could perhaps be an innocent side-effect of a subdued economy unwilling to spend much money on expensive leisure activities, but several industry analysts have suggested that the cause could be "consumers deciding to turn away from the Trump brand". The New York Times itself has been the target of the President's fake news accusations on more than one occasion.…
