The roll out of smart meters in the UK has been plagued with problems, with the government having now pushed back the deadline by four years until 2024. However, it still represents a huge opportunity for some and AIM listed Smart Metering Systems could be a long term winner, despite the short term headwinds.
Ofgem originally required energy suppliers take all reasonable steps to roll out smart meters to all domestic and small business customers by the end of 2020. Following numerous problems this date has now been pushed back to 2024. According to Ofgem smart metering brings immediate benefits to consumers, helping them take control of their energy usage, and is a key enabler for the transition to a more flexible energy market and the move to a low carbon economy.
