Britain was always going to have a messy Autumn. This week’s prorogue drama has given a little preview of just how messy politics may be in the coming months.

Boris Johnson’s adversaries have spent their summer holidays plotting to unseat him before he manages to lead the UK out of the EU before securing a deal with Brussels. But it seems they weren’t prepared for a prorogue, which means parliament will close between 10 September and 14 October. That means there are just five working days for MPs who oppose Mr Johnson’s plans to try to change the law to stop him taking the UK out of the EU without a deal by the end of October.
