The US company earnings picture is not an especially pretty one. Donald Trump might insist that his trade war is posing a greater threat to China than it is to the US, but it is becoming harder to deny that companies exposed to tariffs are being hurt. Consensus expectations for US third quarter financial results have deteriorated as the year has progressed. At the end of June, FactSet data suggested that profits in the three months to September would be roughly flat on the prior year. Now those profits are expected to have fallen by an average of 4.1%.
